Is Too Much Information, Too Much?
Is Too Much Information, Too Much?
When I was growing up, access to the internet wasn't as easy as it is now. If you wanted to know about something, then you had to literally look it up in a book or encyclopedia. While yes, this took longer and was frustrating at times, the good part about it was for the most part you know you were getting accurate information. Now we live in the era of information, but not all the information is true and accurate.
So, what do we do? It is part of our jobs as teachers to teach children that not everything they read on the internet is true but it's also more than that. We have to teach kids how to find the true, unbiased information. For school, for projects, but also for themselves and their own minds and growth. While we need people to form their own options about things it needs to be based on facts and reality, the internet is really good at sharing false information.
Ultimately it is not solely our jobs as their teachers to teach children about the internet, but we can use our influence for good to help them learn the proper way to use it. We can show them how to gain knowledge and not just to go online for stupid social trends. The internet is a very large, very scary place, but you can also learn about everything, and it can be used for good.
