We're All in This Together...
When discussing the trend of Inclusion in the classroom I get very excited. I love the idea of getting to help our friends in the classroom and help them join in in the general classroom with the typical kiddos. Where some might believe that this is not good because of distraction or whatever reason, I on the other hand believe that this is a wonderful thing for all the children. While yes, sometimes there can be a distraction from a child with special needs when they are in the classroom, but this is where the Paraprofessional or Inclusion teacher comes in. By keeping the children in the classroom, we are not only teaching them how to function in society but also helping the other children understand that not everyone is the same and some need more than others.
I personally love this trend and as someone who wants to be in the Special Education world, I will do my best to work with the General Education Teachers to make these things possible for my kiddos. The challenge I see is being currently a paraprofessional; I see that there are a lot of teachers that do not want to have to "deal" with it. Too many teachers just want to get any form of challenge kid out of their way so they can focus on the rest and while I understand to a certain extent, I also see that these children almost need the teacher and classroom more than the ones that stay. For me, I will fight for my students to always have their needs met and if that means I have to have the tough conversations with other teachers or admin to get them what they need then I will do that. Ultimately, we're all here for all the kids, every single one.
